Proposed

If passed, SB 8 would establish education savings accounts (ESA) that would provide parents with a voucher worth up to $8,000 they would use to pay for private school tuition or other education-related expenses. The bill would also protect districts with fewer than 20,000 students from cuts to state revenue associated with enrollment declines.

Texas passed a charter school law in 1995, and today there are more than 900 established charter schools throughout Texas that focus on different academic areas. Students seeking more attention in literacy, or science, have the ability to apply at charter schools that best fit the needs of the student.

ENACTED

Texas has charter-based open enrollment that allows students to pick the charter school of their choice no matter where the school is located (within Texas). Parents and their students can take advantage of this valuable option by visiting multiple charter schools to discover which one is the best fit for their family. Open enrollment is not offered for public schools in the state, as attendance depends on which school attendance zone a family resides in.
